As you reflect on Black history, who are some of the influencers past or present that stand out to you? Many will say Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President Barack Obama, Former First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and the list goes on. In Dr. Ricks' most recent article in Prince William Living Magazine, she highlights a few of the past influencers of Black history and their impact on the advancement of Black people.
Although there has been progress over the decades, there is still work to do. As a work in progress, we all have to play our parts by educating ourselves, sharpening our awareness of other cultures (cultural competency), being cognizant of our responses and behaviors towards others, and expressing empathy to see the perspectives of others. Black History Month does not have to be the only month that these practices take place but all year through.
